Well known as the location inspiring the 1957 movie, The World of Suzie Wong, Wan Chai is one of the oldest residential districts in Hong Kong as early Chinese fisherman made this area their first home. Now, the Wan Chai waterfront is the location of Hong Kong’s Convention and Exhibition Centre and major 5-star hotels, in addition to the offices of many small and medium sized businesses.
The district is famous for its general frenzied buss and at night, continues to draw visiting sailors, expats and tourists to the bars and restaurants.
Housing is dominated by older residential blocks. There was nothing of note until Star Crest was built on Star Street. Since then, newer builds such as The Zenith and The Avenue are drawing young professionals into the area.
